Guitar Ensemble Classes
We’re launching our new guitar ensemble classes from Term One of 2012…. If you’re currently learning or playing guitar, then why not enhance your performance and playing abilities by joining a guitar ensemble. It’s an excellent opportunity to be part of what we consider a guitar orchestra and to meet other guitarists.
WHO CAN BE PART OF IT?
The guitar ensemble classes are open to people of all ages and playing levels. Whether you’re a child, teenager or adult, the guitar ensemble class is designed to teach guitarists how to play and perform as an ensemble (or orchestra), improve your listening skills, develop group playing and overall to have fun.
WHO RUNS THE CLASSES?
The classes will be headed up by music director Daniel Portelli, who has recently been commissioned to compose a piece for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. His influences stem from rock music to classical music and everything in between. Daniel is a young guitarist, composer and arranger who brings creativity, versatility and inspiration into everything he does, and we are priviledged to have him on our team of teachers.
WHEN AND WHERE?
At the moment, the guitar ensemble classes will be held at the Inner West Cultural and Community Centre on Dickson Street in Newtown. As the classes are new, we are only running two classes on Tuesday afternoons at 4:00pm – 5:00pm and 5:00pm – 6:00pm. If you can’t make these times then don’t worry. We’ll definitely be putting on more classes as soon as we have the numbers. Just register your interest here.
First term of Tuesday afternoon classes will commence on Tuesday 31st January, 2012 until 3rd April, 2012.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The guitar ensemble classes run in blocks of 10-week terms, and guitar students will need to enrol at the beginning of each school term. You’ll also be able to register in the first or second week of term if you don’t enrol in time at the beginning.
To determine your playing and reading ability, it is important that you attend the first week of ensemble class so that our music director can assess where you are at. Although it’s an advantage to read guitar music and be able to finger-pick, the pieces can also cater for people who only read guitar tablature and for those who are stronger at playing chords. With Daniel being such a versatile and creative arranger, certain pieces can sometimes be re-arranged to suit the varying levels of guitar players.
During the weeks of each term students will work through various pieces and prepare them for performance at our mid-year or end of year concerts. As you progress, there may be opportunity for you to join a more advanced ensemble class, but it will be determined by the musical director in the following terms.
